Welcome!

Meowdy! I’m Alexz, your favorite cat lady linguist, and I’m winging this blog. Welcome!

My blog is meant to be an alternative outlet for my thoughts on language, freelance life, and probably cats—whatever won’t fit in a LinkedIn post. No set structure, no set rules, just whatever engages me.

I’ll start with a little intro. I’m from the US, I live in the UK, and I work as a combo freelance translator/catsitter. I’m neurodivergent, always feel busy whether there’s stuff going on or not, and my favorite meal is dessert.

I speak 4.75 languages and I’m obsessed with what people say, how they say it, and why. Don’t even think about saying “chicken burger” to me because I will come all the way at you. I have a strong background in theoretical linguistics and I don’t think language practitioners talk about it enough.

My day consists of balancing morning/evening catsitting visits with translation, proofreading, editing, and QA projects. I work from Catalan and Spanish into US English, and I am in love with my source languages. In love, I said. I’ve worked on projects in a range of disciplines but tend to focus on healthcare, academia, and education. Marketing and travel/tourism crop up on occasion too.

Dual-business life is a lot, and definitely was not the intention when I started out, but I love my two disciplines and the way they complement each other. They occupy a lot of my brain space and will probably occupy a lot of this blog.

So…if you’re interested in my thoughts on dialects, multilingualism, small language communities, freelance life, travel and culture, and all the cat puns, join the commeownity!
